Montagu commits to the Science Based Targets initiative

With COP26 on our doorstep, Montagu is pleased to announce that it has signed up to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The commitment marks the latest step in Montagu’s ambition to strengthen its existing ESG efforts and programme.  This initiative helps drive urgent climate action by enabling investors and companies to set emissions reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement and boosts competitiveness in the transition to a zero-carbon economy. By signing up to the SBTi, we are committing to set science-based emissions reduction targets across all the value chain, that are consistent with keeping global warming 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. We aim to set our target within the next 12 months and will follow the latest guidance for private equity on target setting.

Montagu has long been committed to measuring and reducing negative climate impacts in its own operations and its portfolio. Assessments of climate risks and impacts are embedded across the entire investment lifecycle. Although Montagu’s sector focus means that its portfolio already has a low climate impact, we believe that every company has an important role to play to drive the transition to a zero-carbon economy.

Setting science-based targets further formalises our pledge to build and grow sustainable businesses that are positive for both people and the planet, by providing financing, relationships, expertise, and resources. We will continue to work closely with our portfolio companies to assess and reduce carbon emissions, in line with the business ambition for 1.5 °C.

Montagu has been carbon neutral at an operational level (including business travel) since 2019 and contributes to industry guidance for measuring and reducing carbon emissions in the portfolio including through our membership of iCI (Initiative Climat International).

What is COP26?

The COP26 summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change

What is the Science Based Targets initiative?

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets. Over 1600 companies have committed to setting science-based emissions reduction targets.
