In July 2014 Montagu Private Equity completed the acquisition of Arkopharma from its founder Max Rombi and his family.

Founded in 1980, Arkopharma is a pharmaceutical company specialised in the area of herbal food supplements and natural medicines mainly sold in pharmacies. The company has a strong presence in France, Spain, Italy and more than 80 countries. It generates annual sales of over €200 million and has more than 1,300 employees. Arkopharma has a large and highly diversified portfolio of more than 40 brands including Arkogélules, Cys-Control, Arkoroyal and Forcapil. The company is based in Carros, near Nice, where it has its main production site, supplemented by two other plants in Ventimiglia in Italy and Waterford in Ireland.

Arkopharma’s product offering is underpinned by the increasing demand for herbal and natural food supplements, a market which is growing quickly, and faster than the traditional over the counter sector. All its products are sold freely by pharmacists without prescription and are therefore immune to reimbursement risk. This is a sector which is nevertheless closely regulated, with regular reviews and scrutiny carried out by the European regulator (EFSA) and many other food and drug administration authorities.

In addition to the solid market fundamentals, Montagu was also attracted by the company’s strong footprint across various sectors, such as Herbal, Urinary, Rheumatology, Tonus, and Hair & Nails products. It therefore has a very loyal customer base and a reputation for innovation and operational excellence.
